The stolen line
The profuse scenes of Elena Nieves are luxuriant in a strange way. Because here the surface vibrates, deepens and dissolves fragmented by the detailed combination of reticles and linear fibrillations such as by the absence, the interruption of the stroke, the whiteness of the intact paper. The landscape that arrives through the writing of a graphic foliage recalling some bright epiphany; somewhat blinding, arising from a strictly visual nature, in a perpetual burning midday, is at the verge of making all this world to dissolve in paper light, before the impressive presence of what is not drawn, while the heroic lines fight for making it yet visible. At the same time, right there, overflying this uneven constellation, unexpected cuttings, with a deliberately underlined outline, deceitfully harmonic, return to guarantee, in an unstable contrast of proportions, the paradox of absence and sense. They are like an enlargement of details of the whole scene that seem to focus on the volatility of the shapes that slip through the shapes, rarefying the status of all the remaining notations of the image while, exactly, completing their final importance. Other motives advance towards the inside of the surface; misty curtains that build the escenographic depth of the field with a fantastic use on the part of the artist of the most literal transparency –they are drawings built by two or three superimposed layers of translucent paper- each one of them contributing with an epidermis layer to the thick and ephemeral body of the visual story as a fog of ink and paper. Like in the well-known irony of “The purloined letter” of Edgar Allan Poe, in Elena Nieves drawings, what we believe we do not see, what we get desperate to find, is what is more visible.
