The Magic of Things

The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum traces the developments of the still life and its variations in the Northern and Southern Netherlands as well as in Germany from its birth in the late 15th century until approximately 1760.

Les Yeux enchantés | Drawings, 09 27 2008 - 01 18 2009
Works by an illustrious roster of artists will enable visitors to study the graphic techniques and artistic strategies developed by the Surrealists to lend expression to the dreams and unconscious worlds that populate their pictures. This is the first time that the surrealist holdings in the Kupferstichkabinett have been subjected to extensive research and study. The exhibition will include works by Otto Abt, Hans Arp, Serge Brignoni, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Meret Oppenheim, Joan Miró, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Walter Kurt Wiemken and others.

From Canaletto and Turner to Monet | Art, 09 28 2008 - 01 25 2009
The Fondation Beyeler is devoting a magnificent exhibition to the delightful city on the lagoon and the myths that have formed around it, comprising 150 oil and watercolor paintings from major museums and private collections around the world. For the first time, renowned Venice pictures by famous artists such as Canaletto, Francesco Guardi, William Turner, James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Edouard Manet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Odilon Redon, and Paul Signac will be on display together. A large part of the paintings Claude Monet executed in Venice in 1908 will form a high point in the exhibition.
