Watercolours from the Städel Museum Collection Department of Prints and Drawings | Art, 10 2 2008 - 01 4 2009
The exhibition encourages spectators to explore the great diversity of this ambitious technique by means of outstanding examples from the collection's own holdings, up to the recent present. Vedute, landscapes viewed from close up or at a distance, such atmospheric impressions as cloud studies, still lifes, as well as seemingly surreal pictorial inventions by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, Carl Philipp Fohr, Carl Rottmann, Carl Morgenstern, Rudolf von Alt, Louis Eysen, Paul Cézanne, Lovis Corinth, Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Georg Baselitz, Claes Oldenburg, and many other prominent artists attest to a virtuoso handling of the brush in combination with water-soluble, glazing paint.

Master of Flémalle | Old Masters, 11 21 2008 - 02 22 2009
The Master of Flémalle (frequently identified with the artist Robert Campin, active in Tournai) and Rogier van der Weyden (who demonstrably worked in Campin's workshop from 1427 to 1432) are – besides the van Eyck brothers – of crucial importance for the birth and the beginnings of Early Netherlandish painting. Both the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and the Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin boast incomparable holdings as regards the Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden, which will be brought together in this exhibition for the first time.
