Andrea Mantegna and the Art of Printmaking  |  Old Masters, 10 18 2008 - 02 1 2009

Andrea Mantegna and the Art of Printmaking

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart hosts and exhibition with prints by and after Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506), one of the outstanding artists of the Early Renaissance in Northern Italy.  The exhibition is devoted to his graphic oeuvre, presently a subject of some controversy among scholars. The differences of opinion revolve around whether or not Andrea Mantegna executed engravings, i.e. whether he engraved the copper plates himself or had his designs carried out by engravers in his workshop.

Fleischmann commemorating  |  Art, 11 8 2008 - 02 1 2009

Fleischmann commemorating

In 1976, Elly Fleischmann donated eighteen works on paper (gouaches, collages, charcoal drawings, monotypes) by her husband Adolf Richard Fleischmann (1892-1968) to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart's Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. A considerable proportion of these works date from the early phase of the artist's career, and are of special significance in view of the great losses suffered through the destruction of much of his early work during World War II. On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of Adolf Fleischmann's death, the Staatsgalerie will be presenting an exhibition commemorating this remarkable act of patronage, showing this gift as well as later purchases and the four paintings in the museum's collection.
