COBRA & CO

This exhibition, which will be held in parallel with the major retrospective COBRA exhibition at the Royal Fine Arts Museum, aims to revisit via the prints, engravings and other creations, the work of these major post- War artists, between Brussels, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. More than half a century after the official dissolution of this particularly dynamic movement, which from 1948 to 1951 reflected the aspirations of a large group of Northern European artists, its life-giving breath continues to generate enthusiasm. With works by Alechinsky, Dotremont, Asger Jorn, Corneille, Karel Appel, …

COBRA  |  Art, 11 7 2008 - 02 15 2009

COBRA

Created in Paris in November 1948 by artists coming from Copenhague (Jorn), Brussels (Dotremont, Noiret) and Amsterdam (Appel, Corneille, Constant), the CoBrA movement remains unknown out of Europe. Sometimes considered as a tail of Surrealist comet, sometimes as a Nordic expression of the tachiste or informal art, Cobra is also considered as an European formula of the abstract Expressionism as it was then blowing in the United States.
