Galería Helga de Alvear continues the legacy of interest in avant-garde languages begun by the historic Galería Juana Mordó (1964-1995), focusing in recent years on photography, video, and installations, as well as other languages used by conceptual and minimalist artists. Since 1995, it has been located in a 700m2 space near the Reina Sofía National Museum Art Centre, in Madrid. The two rooms on the ground floor show work by international figures and Spanish artists. The upper floor programmes curated exhibitions, site-specific projects, and other works whose singular characteristics make them ideal for this space. Helga de Alvear combines her work as the director of an art gallery with her passion for collecting, which has led her to create her own collection – holdings that she often lends to exhibitions, and which has been the subject of three special shows in the last four years.
