1593 was born Jacob Jordaens, one of the three Flemish Baroque painters, along with Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, to bring prestige to the Antwerp school of painting.

The Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) can be traced back to a sketch by Wilhelm IV. from the year 1841, and the design by Friedrich August Stüler who envisaged a temple-like building raised on a plinth, with a monumental exterior staircase and magnificent stairway inside. In 1866, building work began, and when Stüler died the same year Johann Heinrich Strack took over the site management. The National Gallery was opened on 21st March 1876.

Erected between 1843 and 1855 according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler, Neues Museum represents an outstanding example of 19th century museum architecture, both seen on its own and as part of the Museum Island complex. The Neues Museum was severely damaged by bombing in 1943 and 1945. Only in 1985 was the reconstruction of the building decided upon; initial emergency safety measures and a new foundation followed in 1989. The architectural office of David Chipperfield is responsible for the restoration of the Neues Museum within the context of the Masterplan Museum Island. The art collection, the foundations of which were laid by Reinhold Würth in the 1960s, today comprises approximately over 14,000 works of art. It mainly focuses on painting, graphic art and sculptures created in the time between the end of the 19th century and the present time. Besides the “Classical Modernity” which is assuming ever more importance and which is impressively represented in the collection by artists such as Max Beckmann, Max Ernst, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde or Pablo Picasso, sculptures become increasingly popular. Works by sculptors such as Eduardo Chillida, Tony Cragg, Alfred Hrdlicka, Robert Jacobsen, Anish Kapoor, Henry Moore or Bernar Venet complement the collection. It also comprises large holdings of works by Hans Arp, Horst Antes, Georg Baselitz, Max Bill, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Anselm Kiefer, Bernhard Luginbühl and others.

The Museum of Photography has been a magnet for photography enthusiasts from all over the world since its opening in 2004. In the last few years alone, over 700,000 visitors have flocked to see exhibitions organised by the Helmet Newton Foundation, ranging from 'Sex and Landscapes' to 'Newton, Nachtwey, Lachapelle: Men, War & Peace' and 'Pigozzi and the Paparazzi'.
The Museum of Photography is shared between two main organisers, with a total of 2000 square metres of floor space at their disposal. The first is the Helmut Newton Foundation itself, which occupies the two lower floors that have housed the successful permanent exhibition 'Helmut Newton's Private Property', as well as individual exhibitions on the Helmut Newton's work and his contemporaries. The second is the Art Library's Photographic Collection, which presides over the newly resplendent Kaisersaal on the second floor.
For four years, the Kaisersaal's prevailing state of ruin formed an unusual venue for contemporary art and photography exhibitions held by the Art Library's Photographic Collection. A group of photographers and artists (Raimund Kummer, M+M, Philipp Schönborn, Boris Hars-Tschachotin and Hannes Nehls, Regina Schmeken, Reiner Leist, Raymond Depardon and Simone Mangos) designed spectacular installations specifically for the room that had been severely damaged in the war. Their exhibitions always tested the very limits of photography, its relation to other media such as sculpture and film, as well as its relation to religion and history.

From Caspar David Friedrich to Gerhard Richter. The broad spectrum of works extending from the Romantic period to the present day and the exceptional quality of the paintings in the collection are the defining features of the Galerie Neue Meister and make it one of the most important museums of its kind in Germany. The new exhibition in the Albertinum contains masterpieces by the Romantic painters as well as 20th-century art and contemporary works. Contemporary art enters into an exciting dialogue with the older holdings of the collection. The 21st-century visitor encounters a broad intellectual universe in which the various stylistic periods are presented in unusual proximity, so that they are experienced in a new and different way.

Historical roots in Württemberg and an international orientation after World War II define the distinctive character of the collections today. They stand out for their diversity of European 14th to 20th century art and American avant-garde after 1945 with different emphases on artists, epochs or styles in the respective collection. Moreover the represented genres like painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic or photography show a variety of artistic techniques.

The ZKM | Media Museum is the world’s first and only museum for interactive art. Its thematic spectrum covers such areas as interactive film, simulation techniques for Cyberspace and the use of latest software applications on the Internet. In the Media Museum we see the juxtaposition of media art with popular games or research projects with didactic work spaces – and the critical debate surrounding the products of commercial and global culture is met head on.
