The new Groninger Museum (1994) is not merely a casing for art, it is a work of art in itself, a principle that is occurring to an increasing extent in contemporary (museum) architecture. It is an artwork in the centre of the city, traversed by public space where passers-by are directly confronted by all kinds of works of art.

The Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis was a state museum until it was privatised in 1995. The collection of old Dutch and Flemish masters is given the greatest care and attention. It is indeed remarkable to find a top-notch collection of seventeenth-century paintings housed in a seventeenth-century palace. The museum mounts one to two exhibitions every year; its own collection always forms the basis of these presentations. The Mauritshuis opens its doors to everyone by providing instructive and easily accessible information.
