The 13th Carrara International Sculpture Biennial Nient’altro che scultura. Nothing but sculpture, curated by Francesco Poli, is divided into several sections: Homages, The Topicality of Marble, New Statues, Sculpture as a Living Body, In Town, Sculpting Time, and The Marble Workshops. The choice of the title underlines the specific character of this event, created in 1957, and it reasserts the tight link between the town and the production of sculptures.
The exhibition focuses on the most significant and innovative aspects of sculpture, giving rise to an in-depth reflection and to a more precise vision of the present situation in this creative sector, by comparing young emerging artists with artists of great renown.
Spetial Homages Louise Bourgeois Parco della Padula: On exhibition in the park are Eye-benches, two pairs of marble sculptures by the American sculptor of French origin. Almost 100 year old, she is one of the greatest living artists, a veritable icon of the international feminist culture. Mario Merz Chiesa del Suffragio: A large Igloo by Merz, Auf dem Tisch, der Hineinstösst in das Herz des Iglu, has been installed in the empty church and enters into a dialectical rapport with the church’s Baroque structure.

Giulio Paolini Accademia di Belle Arti: In the Accademia’s Aula Magna, home to a group of casts of classical statues, Paolini’s work creates a metaphysical tension, a dialogue with the context, giving rise to a complex aesthetical reflection between past and present. Pietro Cascella Accademia di Belle Arti The Accademia’s Sala dei Marmi houses a series of original plaster studies for important monumental works by this sculptor who recently died and worked mainly in stone.
Centro Arti Plastiche Internazionali e Contemporanee The Topicality of Marble The section emphasizes on the one hand the artistic importance of marble, of which the Carrara quarries are the main producers in the world, whereas on the other it also attests to how today marble (and generally all types of stone) is again considered a sculptural medium having special expressive characteristics, and therefore also used in the most innovative creations of many important artists such as Domenico Borrelli, Gianni Caravaggio, Jessica Carroll, David Casini, Mat Collishaw, Gianni Colosimo, Tony Cragg, Lara Favaretto, Flavio Favelli, Richard Long, Luigi Mainolfi, Aldo Mondino, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Nunzio, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Leonardo Pivi, Marc Quinn, Mario Rizzi and others.

New Statues An important and significant aspect of sculpture instead is found in the second section: a renewed interest in the representation of both realistic and hyper-realistic human figures, but also of all types of variously deformed and elaborated body shapes. These statues or human (and animal) simulacrums are made not only with traditional materials (bronze, marble, wood, plaster, and papier-mâché) but also, especially, with synthetic materials (fibreglass, latex, silicon, and artificial wax). Works by the following artists are here on display: Stephan Balkenhol, Paolo Chiasera, Marco Del Re, Jan Fabre, Daniel Glaser & Magdalena Kunz, Antony Gormley, Paolo Grassino, Robert Gligorov, Thomas Hirschhorn, Martin Honert, Shirazeh Houshiary, Lucio Perone, Maurizio Rabino, Juliao Sarmento, Thomas Schütte, Diego Scroppo, Kiki Smith, Jan Van Oost.
Sculpture as a Living Body Hosted in the museum, the third, smaller section is dedicated to some important video works where the artist uses the vital and plastic tension of his body (as well as those of others) as a fundamental means of expression. Works by the following artists are here on display: Marina Abramovic, John Coplans, Regina Josè Galindo, Joan Jonas, Paul McCarthy, Tony Oursler, and Ene Liis Semper.

In Town Duomo di Sant’Andrea Via del Plebiscito. The problem of the relationship between plastic works of art and urban spaces is analyzed in the ancient Duomo and in Via del Plebiscito, with articulate proposals beyond the traditional concept of placing sculptures outdoors. In this sense, various works differing in material, technique, form, spatial criterion for their placement, as well as in aesthetic and cultural concepts and intentions were deliberately chosen to be part of the exhibition. Works by the following artists are on display:Salvatore Astore, Mirko Basaldella, Botto & Bruno, Sergio Cervietti, Riccardo Galleni, Giacomo Manzù, Luciano Massari, Eliseo Mattiacci, Matteo Peducci & Mattia Savini, Saverio Todaro, Filippo Tincolini, Jelena Vasiljev, Luca Vitone.
