The Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro of Milan in partnership with UniCreditGroup present its Project Room, an exhibition space of about 100 square metres to be used by young artists or groups that have distinguished themselves in cultural activities in Italy.
Last May 4 the artist Sissi inaugurated the project room with the exhibition titled Addosso, curated by Angela Vettese and Milovan Farronato. As is demonstrated by the constant attention she pays to performance procedures, this artist tends to identify her works with her own body, which is modified by clothes that she herself sews and transforms. Like the body, clothing and accessories are a continuous work in progress, almost a sort of diary that accompanies her life.

Always ready to use her sewing machine, even half an hour before going out, Sissi conceives clothing not as mere external appearance, but as something that reveals one’s substance, makes one ‘feel oneself’ in a certain manner – a way of wearing, with either nonchalance or severity, all the crossroads of a personal existence rich in intense sensibility and vital force able to face adversity. Far from being aesthetic or glamour-oriented research, Sissi’s work on disguise and ‘dress’ is a supreme, albeit paradoxical, attempt to reveal her personality with total sincerity.
Taking this premise as a starting point, Sissi exhibits in the Project Room of the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, hundreds of skirts, blouses, overcoats, earrings and jewels that she herself modelled; the materials used range from ceramics to plastic, rubber, synthetic fur and stitched electrical wire. This wardrobe is stripped of all decorative frills and removed from the warmth of its home in Bologna and placed in the cold setting of the Foundation, where every element will be accompanied by a description. This will include not only the year when the piece was made and was modified, but, wherever possible, a sort of brief diary of the occasions and emotions they represent in the artist’s life. In this way the personal life of the artist, whose decision to use a pseudonym is not surprising, manifests its performance nature and the constant alternation of the private and public sphere.
