Divided into nine sections, with one hundred and fifty drawings and paintings on display from museums and private collections around the world, this exhibit is truly a clamorous event for the exhibit scene in Italy and elsewhere. Full of masterpieces that have never been seen before in Italy, this exhibit wants to tell the entire story - human, poetic and artistic - of two great 19th century artists, from beginning to end. It therefore does not focus only on the two months that Van Gogh and Gauguin spent together in Arles in the fall of 1888, but covers the entire life of both to better understand the truth of the subtitle of the exhibit: the adventure of new color.
One hundred and fifty works from museums and collections around the world were chosen for this exhibit divided into nine sections that narrate the exciting and intense lives of the two artists, from their apprenticeships in Paris and the Netherlands to Gauguin’s famous works in Tahiti and those of Van Gogh in Provence and Auvers.
Needless to say, such a sumptuous exhibit could never have been possible without the fundamental cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam and the Kröller-Müller Museum of Otterlo, which lent an incredible 31 paintings of Van Gogh. This fact alone demonstrates their great trust in the institutions that are promoting and organizing this exhibit in Brescia, which is not merely a parade of masterpieces, but a well-designed presentation of the relationship between the two artists and comparisons not only between the two, but also with the cultural environment of the time.
