Albrecht Dürer was born a day like today in 1471

20 May, 2017

Albrecht Dürer: Self-portrait in a Fur-Collared Robe (1500) Oil on linden wood, 67.1 cm (26.4 in) x 48.7 cm (19.2 in) Alte Pinakothek.

As a painter and trained goldsmith, Albrecht Dürer proved his skill in a wide range of media: a prolific panel painter, celebrated portraitist, master of the woodcut and revolutionary of the engraving technique, he carried out elaborate commissions for merchants, noblemen and emperors.

Dürer was the first German artist who already during his lifetime enjoyed wide recognition all over Europe. He was so successful that he founded a workshop, introduced his own “copyright”, and commissioned traveling salesmen to sell his art beyond the borders of Nuremberg.

Dürer also studied theoretical subjects, pursued scholarly and scientific questions, investigated nature and the human being and wrote and published teaching manuals on the knowledge he thus acquired.

We highlight here two exhibitions: The young Dürer, dedicated to his early art and the circumstances of his life which enabled his unique work in Germanisches Nationalmuseum in 2012; and Albrecht Dürer, staged at the Städel in 2014, focused on his art and context.
