Botticelli was born in 1445

1 March, 2016

Sandro Botticelli (true name Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi) was born a day like today in 1445, and died on May 17, 1510. The Renaissance Italian painter belonged to the Florentine School, under the patronage of Lorenzo de Medici. His work was quickly forgotten after his death, to be rediscovered in the nineteenth century and since then, his work has been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting.

We highlight here the exhibition that, first presented at Gemaldegalerie in Berlin and now about to open a the Victoria and Albert Museum in London under the name Botticelli Reimagined, that traces the history of the numerous appropriations and re-evaluations of artist’s work: The Botticelli Renaissance.

We also recommend to take a look at the video Venus and Mars, by the National Gallery of London.
