Edvard Munch was born in 1863
12 December, 2015
Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a painter and printmaker known all over the world mainly for his themes dealing with despair, stress and haunted visions.
Greatly influenced by the German Expressionism in the early 20th century, his subjects reflect the fundamental experiences of human existence and the lives of modern people. The Scream, as well as Vampire and Madonna, are among his most famous works.
We highlight two great exhibitions: the first in 2014, at the Kunsthaus Zurich, which holds the largest collection of paintings by Edvard Munch outside Norway; and the second, an ongoing exhibition at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, entitled Archetypes.
