Future Generation Art Prize@Venice 2017, Collateral Event – Venice Biennale

12 May, 2017 - 13 May, 2017

Future Generation Art Prize@Venice 2017, Collateral Event - Venice Biennale.

PinchukArtCentre and Victor Pinchuk Foundation present an exhibition at the Biennale Arte 2017 of the work of 21 young artists from 16 countries, shortlisted for the 4th edition of The Future Generation Art Prize, the global art prize for artists up to 35.

The exhibition is an official Collateral Event of the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. It will be on view in the spectacular setting of the Palazzo Contarini Polignac from 12 May to 13 August 2017. The 21 artists on show this year in Venice, chosen from amongst 4,500 entries, include among others the winner of the $100,000 Future Generation Art Prize 2017, the South African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape, and the winner of the $20,000 Special Prize, Kenyan/British artist Phoebe Boswell.

In addition there will be new work by the other shortlisted artists who are: Njideka Akunyili Crosby (Nigeria / United States), Iván Argote (Colombia / France), Firelei Báez (Dominican Republic / United States), Vivian Caccuri (Brazil), Sol Calero (Venezuela / Germany), Asli Çavuşoğlu (Turkey), Vajiko Chachkhiani (Georgia / Germany), Carla Chaim (Brazil), Christian Falsnaes (Denmark / Germany), EJ Hill (United States), Andy Holden (United Kingdom), Li Ran (China), Ibrahim Mahama (Ghana), Rebecca Moss (United Kingdom), Sasha Pirogova (Russia), Kameelah Janan Rasheed (United States), Martine Syms (United States), Kemang Wa Lehulere (South Africa), Open Group (Ukraine).

The curatorial concern to make the exhibition more than a mere representation of 21 artists gave way to a majority of new in-situ produced works that often share an interest in a complex socio-political narrative that explores history – both in a personal and geo-political sense. Themes that arise from seemingly topical colonial legacy and the precarious human condition today, translate into the works that engage in a dialogue or confront with the context of Palazzo Contarini Polignac and its historical importance. They challenge an understanding of the contemporary world, poised between the personal and the collective, familiar and uncanny, imaginary and real.

As a whole this exhibition, at times, suggests possibilities for tomorrow. This attempt to envisage future scenarios in a world defined by precariousness and uncertainties is confronted with in-depth exploration of the question of social responsibility of the artist not only as a visionary of the future but foremost as an advocate for change.

The Future Generation Art Prize @ Venice 2017 exhibition is curated by Björn Geldhof, Artistic Director of the PinchukArtCentre and invited curator Anna Smolak. Launched in 2009 by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, the Future Generation Art Prize is a worldwide contemporary art prize, created to discover, recognise and give long-term support to a future generation of artists. It is important contribution to the open participation of younger artists in the dynamic cultural development of societies in global transition.
