Girl with a pearl earring’s painter, Jan Vermeer, was born in 1632

31 October, 2016 - 1 November, 2016

Dutch painter Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer (1632 – 1675) is renown all around the world thanks to his particular exploration of domestic interior middle-class life scenes, with an unique use of light. The unique temperament of the art of Vermeer and his contemporaries reflects bourgeois culture in 17th century Holland.

Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He was recognized during his lifetime in Delft and The Hague, but his modest celebrity gave way to obscurity after his death. In the 19th century though, Vermeer was rediscovered by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him, although only 34 paintings are universally attributed to him today.

He is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

Some highlighted exhibitions: Vermeer and the Golden Century of Dutch painting at Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome in 2012, and Vermeer and his contemporaries, ongoing at Maurithuis.
