Austrian artist, poet and playwright Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) is best known for his intense expressionistic portraits and landscapes. A protagonist of Viennese modernism, he depicted the people he knew and his view of humanity and society with his distinctive expressive approach and a dramatic use of brushstrokes.
A leading exponent of Austrian Expressionism, Kokoschka gained international renown very early and shaped a style that suddenly makes a very contemporary appearance.
We highlight here three main exhibitions: the one that Belvedere Museum presented in 2008 dedicated to his early work, the one at the Wolfburg Museum with the title Humanist and Rebel, and the one at the Leopold Museum in 2014 called The Self Focus.
