Austrian artist, poet and playwright Oskar Kokoschka (who was born on this day in 1886 and died on February 22, 1980) is one of the protagonists of Viennese modernism. Best known for his intense expressionistic portraits and landscapes, he depicted the people he knew and his view of humanity and society with his distinctive expressive approach and a dramatic use of brushstrokes.
He was a leading exponent of the Austrian Expressionism.
We highlight three main exhibitions: the one that Belvedere Museum presented in 2008 dedicated to his early work, the one at the Wolfburg Museum with the title Humanist and Rebel, and the one at the Leopold Museum in 2014 called The Self Focus.
