Lucas Cranach died in 1553

16 October, 2015

A day like today in 1553, German painter, printmaker and engraving Lucas Cranach the Elder died. Known by his portraits and also his religious and mythological subjects, he had a large workshop and was the first of a “painters dynasty”, as his son Lucas Cranach the Younger continued the lineage.

We remember here the exhibition entitled Cranach in Baviera, that was the third exhibition to mark the Alte Pinakothek’s 175th anniversary, comprising 30 selected paintings from the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen’s extensive holdings.
