German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 – 1553) was a painter and printmaker. He was court painter to Frederick the Wise of Saxony for fifty years and head of a large and very busy studio in Wittenberg, introducing new subjects into German painting, particularly a complete new imagery of the nude and the erotic, as well as humanistic themes and a particularly incisive and innovative portraiture.
Cranach was a leading figure of “another Renaissance”, which was different from the classicism theorized and practiced by his great contemporary Albrecht Dürer, as well as from the Italian Renaissance.
We remember here the exhibition held in 2011 at Alte Pinakothek in Munich, entitled Cranach in Bavaria, celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Museum.
