Pieter Paul Rubens was born a day like today in 1577

28 June, 2017

Flemish Baroque painter Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640) is one of the most important painters of his period, known internationally by his style that emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality.

Rubens is well-known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.

He was a renowned artist but also a diplomat, letter writer and entrepreneur, who was knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England. His work was very much determined by the European context in political, social, religious and economic terms.

We highlight here the 2010 exhibition Rubens at the Prado Museum, as the Museum houses the largest and one of the world’s finest collections of works by Rubens. Also, the first international exhibition at the Louvre Lens was dedicated to this artist under the title The Europe of Rubens.
