Sculptor Aristide Maillol died in 1944
27 September, 2016
Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol (December 8, 1861 – September 27, 1944) was a French sculptor, painter, and printmaker.
Contrary to his contemporary, Rodin, who concentrated on creating male nudes, Maillol is known primarily for his monumental female figures. He examined many different positions, materials and forms, taking inspiration from early classical sculptors but combining this with a modern take on shape, rhythm and style. He was not necessarily searching for a perfect, natural representation of the female body, but rather for the ultimate power of expression through sculpture.
We highlight an exhibition held at Kunstdam Rotterdam, emphasizing Maillol’s modernity in his time: Aristide Maiollo, sculptor.
