Sunflowers and Starry night painter, Vincent Van Gogh, was born a day like today in 1853

30 March, 2017

Dutch artist Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 – 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work had far-reaching influence on 20th-century art.

He was a prolific artist, and his work includes portraits, self portraits, landscapes, still lifes, olive trees and cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. n just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings. Critics largely ignored his work until after his presumed suicide in 1890, after years of anxiety and presumably mental illness. He was 37.

We remember here the exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Art Museum, Van Gogh Up Close, dedicated to the works made between 1886 and 1890 in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers.

We also highlight the last year exhibition titled Van Gogh’s Bedrooms at the Art Institute of Chicago, that offered the opportunity to see, for the first time in North America, all three versions of the famous painting The Bedroom.
