The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium celebrate their 215th birthday.
1 September, 2016
Exactly 215 years ago, on September 1st 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte signed the “Chaptal decree” creating 15 departmental museums including the one in Brussels: hence the future Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium were born.
From a few dozen paintings sent from Paris at the time, the collection has expanded to more than 20,000 works today, tracing the history of art from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century.
More than two centuries after their creation, the RMFAB are listed in the global top 100 of most visited art museums and continue to renew themselves.
To mark this anniversary, a series of events and festivities will be organized on November 27th. In addition to the permanent collections and the temporary exhibitions, visitors can join guided tours, take part in activities in the halls (concerts, recitals, improv games, …) and behind the scenes of the museum (archives, workshops and restoration works in progress).
