The masters of Renaissance Venice: Bellini, Giorgione, Titian

With In the Age of Giorgione in the Royal Academy of Arts – Sackler Galleries until 5 June, curator Per Rumberg heads to Venice to track down its elusive masters in the golden age of painting.

In the late 1400s, Venice was a vibrant centre of trade with a strong artistic tradition – and Giovanni Bellini, then in his 70s, was its undisputed master. Then, in the first decade of the 1500s, two new figures appeared on the scene: Giorgione and Titian, bringing with them innovations that revolutionised Renaissance painting, from portraiture to allegory and altarpieces.
